History of Vandevert Ranch

Vandevert Ranch boasts a rich and vibrant history in Southern Deschutes County. The original Vandevert Ranch was homesteaded in 1892 by William Plutarch Vandevert, who brought cattle to the ranch, as well as his eight children and schoolteacher wife, Sadie. The original log homestead and one-room schoolhouse are counted among the 33 sites listed as Historic Resources in Deschutes County, and the ranch itself pre-dates the founding of the city of Bend. The Vandevert family lives on the ranch until the 1980s. Grace Vandevert McNellis, William’s granddaughter, no longer lives on the property, but still visits and has published a book, Home on the Vandevert Ranch.

The Vandevert children and grandchildren lived a pioneer-style life on the ranch, drawing water from a hand pump, attending school in the one-room Harper School and heating the house with wood stoves.

In the beginning, the primary business of Vandevert Ranch was cattle wearing the Hashknife brand. The Hashknife brand started in Weatherford, Texas, in the 1870s. Bill Vandevert used the brand in his days as a range foreman for the Aztec Land and Cattle Company in Texas and Arizona. The Hashknife name and brand appear throughout the Vandevert Ranch community, most prominently on Hashknife Road, which bridges the Little Deschutes River and connects the road to the barn.

The modern history if the ranch began in 1988 when Jim and Carol Gardener purchased and restored the Homestead and developed the property into a high-end, luxury gated community. Currently, Vandevert Ranch occupies 400 acres of land 16-miles south of Bend, Oregon, with 18 homesites. The low-density occupancy makes Vandevert Ranch a coveted, private community that draws in the prominent property owners who value privacy, luxury and security.

The new homeowners and HOA at Vandevert Ranch have banded together to protect the ranch even though they have no direct relation to the Vandevert family. Residents living in Vandevert Ranch want the legacy to continue even after all of the Vandeverts have passed and they have a tremendous amount of pride in the community.
