Earlier this month, personal finance website WalletHub published the results of an extensive study that ranks U.S. cities based on a variety of factors. The website announced that Bend ranks this year as the fourth fastest-growing small city in the U.S. In order to determine the ranking, WalletHub compared 515 U.S. cities through 15 key metrics. Datasets ranged from a city’s college-educated population to unemployment rate decreases.
According to the economic growth survey conducted by the company, Bend ranks 13th for population growth, first for job growth and 21st in median household income growth. With a growing number of jobs, a low unemployment rate and a continually increasing number of businesses coming to the area, Bend proves to be drawing in residents from all over the nation.
An article published by The Bulletin, Bend’s daily newspaper, reported in June that Central Oregon leads the state with a 15% growth rate for employment projections. The Oregon Employment Department reports that the region is expected to add close to 15,000 jobs by 2027, making it an even more desirable location to call home.
Why Move to Bend?
Beyond economic factors, Bend attracts new residents thanks to the recreational wonderland we call home, along with entertainment, cultural and quality of life elements. With increased job growth projected for the area, you can find a great job and spend your weekends skiing at Mt. Bachelor, exploring the dozens of breweries that call the area home and tear up the mountain bike trails at Phil’s Trail.
In addition to being your gateway to the great outdoors, Bend offers something for everyone. Head downtown on First Friday and discover works from area artists spanning the gamut of styles and techniques. Art and culture take hold over at the DIY Cave and the Brightplace Gallery on Bend’s Southeast side. There’s never a shortage of galleries displaying local art, stage performances, cultural events and live music. Bend boasts a strong community culture that allows everyone to connect with people pursuing similar passions.
Bend celebrates entrepreneurs in addition to job seekers. Many people in Bend make a living as their own boss, from skilled trades like woodworking to artists to the tech-savvy digital nomads that can work from anywhere. And when you have the ability to work from anywhere, why not work from the Clearing Rock Bar between turns on the 4,300 acres accessible via ski lift at Mt. Bachelor? Living in Bend allows you to live your own dream without the confines of a traditional 9-5 existence (though you’ll find great office jobs in Bend, too!).
